EUROPEAN UNION: "Gilead Sciences Receives European Regulatory Recommendation for Viread as Hepatitis B Drug "

The European Medicines Agency's Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use has recommended that Gilead Sciences Inc.'s drug Viread be approved as a treatment for hepatitis B, the company announced Wednesday. Viread is currently used to treat HIV; Gilead is also seeking the approval of US regulators for its use against hepatitis B. The committee's recommendation will be forwarded to the European Commission, which is likely to update Viread's label with the new recommendation within a few months. Once approved, the new recommendation will be effective in the 27 nations of the European Union.
